Rant: I just read that over half of all crane deaths happen in the first 90 days on a new site
I was going through the OSHA accident reports for tower and mobile cranes at lunch, and the number that stopped me was 54 percent. More than half of the fatalities happen in the first 90 days on a new site. I always figured experience kept me safe, but the data says it is the site that kills you, not the seat time. A lot of those cases were guys with 10, 15, even 20 years in the cab who just did not know the soil or the power lines yet. Now I walk my whole swing radius and bug the site super about underground utilities before I even unlock the cab. Has anyone else changed how they do a first week on a new job because of something they read?
