Why do so many stylists still not section hair properly before coloring?

I had a new client come in last week who was a mess from another salon. Her roots were patchy and the color was bleeding everywhere. I asked her what happened and she said the stylist just slapped the color on without sectioning. I see this way too often from people who should know better. Sectioning takes maybe 2 extra minutes but it saves you from uneven color and angry clients. Am I the only one who thinks this is basic stuff that too many people skip?

The patchy roots and bleeding color thing hit close to home. I had a client come in with the same problem last month and it turned out the previous stylist didn't even bother doing basic quadrants. What worked for me was showing the client how I section her hair with clips in a before photo, then comparing it to what she got before. People don't know what they're missing until they see the difference.

Gotta jump in here because what you said about showing clients the before photo is smart but I gotta gently point something out. Not everyone's hair needs a full four quadrant section job. I've seen stylists put a client through 20 clips when a simple two section part would've done the trick just fine. It's more about actually knowing where the scalp darkens and lightens naturally, not just going through the motions of clipping. Still totally agree most people skip basic steps they should have learned in year one though.
