My toner application was backwards for 5 years, a client's hair told me
I always applied toner from the ends up because that's how my mentor did it, but last Tuesday a client with heavy build-up came in and her ends went dark purple while the roots stayed brassy. Turns out I should have been starting at the roots and working down, especially on porous hair, because the ends soak up way more product. Has anyone else had a basic technique click for them after years of doing it wrong, and what finally tipped you off?

Wait what, FIVE years?? Girl I would have lost my mind way before that. Purple ends on a paying client is my actual nightmare, I can't even imagine the panic in that moment. But honestly this makes so much sense now that you say it, the ends are like sponges and the roots are basically straws that need all the help they can get. I had a similar lightbulb moment with bleach, I always did the midshaft first and then the roots last, but it took me three years to realize I was over processing the mids every single time. The day I finally started sectioning by porosity instead of just going bottom to top, everything changed. Good on you for sharing this, I bet a ton of people are about to have their own mind blown right now.
