My wife dragged me to her coworker's cookout in Dayton and I ended up arguing with this retired surveyor named Walt about whether the horizon curve is real. I figured it was all YouTube junk, but he grabbed two old field books from his truck and walked me through the same benchmark elevations he shot in 1987 and again in 2019, and the numbers lined up the way you'd predict for a curve over 11 miles. I still think half the stuff online is grifters chasing merch money, but that specific measurement is now something I can't wave off the way I did before. What finally moved me is that he never once brought up a video, just paper and a level and his own initials in the margins. Has anyone here actually gone out and tested the curvature thing themselves with gear instead of arguing about it on a forum?
