Had a talk with a driveway owner that changed how I finish edges

Last week I finished a job for a guy in Phoenix who pointed out a small divot near the edge of his driveway from three years ago. He said it filled with water every time it rained and eventually cracked the whole corner off. That conversation made me go back over my last three jobs and recheck my edge work with a straightedge, caught two spots I would have missed.

Did you ask him what caused that first divot in the first place?

Start by asking if that divot was actually from bad edge work or just normal settling. For all you know @patricia_lee, the guy couldve had a leaky sprinkler or soil washout that had nothing to do with how the edge was finished. A three year old small divot turning into a crack sounds more like a drainage issue than a trowel technique problem to me.
