Why I stopped using those magnetic screw trays for laptop repairs

Used to swear by them, but lost a 2mm screw inside a MacBook last month because the tray flipped over. Now I just use a simple white sticky note grid, costs me nothing and I never lose track.

Started using painter's tape on a white foam tray instead. Tape each screw down in order as I take them out, and label the tape with a sharpie. Never had a screw roll away or get lost since. The magnetic trays always stressed me out too, especially around sensitive components. Sticky notes work great too though, whatever keeps the parts from moving around.

Used to think magnetic trays were the only way to go for small parts. But you make a really good point here. I never even considered them flipping over, that's a disaster waiting to happen. A sticky note grid is smart, keeps everything in place and costs nothing. I might actually switch to that method myself now that you mention it. Losing a screw inside a machine is just too big a risk to take for convenience.
