Rack cleanup turned into a full day project, worth it

Tackled a server room in Topeka last Tuesday. Dust so thick I could write my name in it. Found three dead UPS units behind a false wall. Customer said 'just swap the batteries' but we ended up recabling everything. Anyone else find hidden hardware during routine jobs?

Honestly I get the appeal of a cleanup like that, but I see these jobs a bit differently. Finding hidden dead gear usually means someone before you skipped the boring part of documenting things, and now you're stuck paying for their shortcuts. We did a site last month where the "surprise" find was a whole rack of old switches that should've been decommissioned years ago. Customer was thrilled until they saw the labor hours on the invoice for untangling that mess. Sometimes a routine swap stays routine for a reason, and that's not a bad thing.
