Hot take: stop reimaging every machine that comes in slow
Everyone in my shop wants to jump straight to a clean Windows install the second a customer says their laptop is slow, and I think that is lazy troubleshooting. Last month I got a Dell in from a guy in Peoria who was ready to pay for a full wipe, and all it needed was a dying 2.5 inch drive swapped for a $40 SSD plus a RAM stick, done in about 45 minutes. I get why people reimage, it is predictable and you can hand it back the same day, but you lose all the customer's settings and half the time the real problem was hardware anyway. I ran a quick SMART check and the drive was throwing read errors, so no amount of fresh installs would have fixed that. My rule now is hardware tests first, then malware scans, and only wipe if the OS is truly toast. Curious if other techs here actually check the drive health before they nuke a system, or am I the odd one out on this?
