Thinking about how our library's old floor sander finally gave out last month after smoothing probably 200 floors.

We had to pool donations for a new one, which got me wondering if anyone else has a tool in their library that's just seen too much love and how you handled replacing it.

That old sander sounds like a real workhorse. Our branch had a similar thing happen with a heavy duty hole punch. The arm just snapped clean off. We ended up putting a picture of the old one on the donation jar with a note about how many years it served. People really connected with that and we got the replacement funded pretty quick. Sometimes showing the worn out tool does the trick.

That picture on the donation jar is such a good idea. It makes the whole thing feel real, like you're replacing a part of the library's story, not just a broken machine. We should have done that with our sander, it had this deep groove worn in the handle from decades of use. Giving something a little history makes people want to be part of the next chapter.
