The day I gave up 'constructive criticism' after a neighbor's tomato comment

I used to soften every piece of advice with two compliments and a question, but when my neighbor in Austin told me my tomato cage advice was 'nice but useless,' I switched to just saying the fix outright, because people over 40 don't need their egos managed, so has anyone else found that direct bluntness cuts through the noise better than wrapping it in sugar?
