I was giving advice wrong for years until a neighbor in Seattle told me something simple

I always jumped in with solutions right away, but she said, 'Let me finish my story first.' That one line made me see I wasn't really listening. What's a better way to start when someone comes to you with a problem?

It's wild how often we're just waiting for our turn to talk instead of actually hearing people. That Seattle neighbor nailed it.

Yeah, that neighbor's advice is spot on. I've learned to just start with "Tell me more about that" and then shut up. It forces me to listen to the whole story instead of planning my answer. hart.taylor is right, we're usually just waiting to talk. The fix is making your first goal understanding, not fixing.
