Had to choose between two leaders at my HOA meeting, and I went with the wrong one
Our HOA in Tucson had a vote 5 months back between two people running for the board, and I picked the guy who talked a big game about lowering dues over the woman who mostly just asked questions at meetings. I figured the loud one would actually get stuff done, you know? Turns out he blew our whole repair fund on new landscaping for the entry sign, and now the pool pump is dead and there is nothing left to fix it. The quiet woman I skipped over had been telling people for months that the fund was already thin and we needed to slow down. A few folks on my street are trying to call a special meeting to undo all this, but the rules make it slow going. I keep wondering what would have happened if I had just asked her a few questions before voting. Has anyone here ever had to sort out a mess like this with their own HOA board?
That line about the quiet woman telling people for months the fund was thin really hits home, because we ignored the same kind of person on our board two years ago. What worked for us was skipping the big vote and just doing small stuff first. A few of us started showing up to every meeting with one question each, nothing mean, just asking where the money went. After about three meetings other owners started coming too, and that made it way easier to get the whole board to look at the books. If you can get even five or six houses on your street to do the same, it adds up fast. Honestly the slow rules work in your favor once more people are watching, they just feel slow when you are the only one pushing.
