A guy at my block meeting told me to stop solving problems for people, and I finally get why
I run the cleanup crew for our neighborhood in Dayton and I always jumped in to fix things myself, like calling the city about the broken streetlight on Vernon Ave and just handling it. At the meeting in March, a longtime resident named Walt said I was doing too much and that people stop showing up when one person does all the work. I sat with that for a couple days and realized he was right, so now I hand out the city's 311 number and walk neighbors through making the call themselves. Three people have done it on their own since then, and two of them came back to the next meeting. How do you get people to take the lead without feeling like you're just dumping work on them?
