I finally stopped fighting my umbilical on deck and the fix came from a new kid's comment
Last Tuesday on a dock job in Gulfport I watched a green hat coil our 300 ft umbilical in big loose loops instead of tight wraps like I'd done for 12 years. I started to correct him and then stopped, because his way let the hose breathe and it laid flat on the deck with zero kinks at the bend restrictor. My old tight coils were putting memory into the line, and that's why my comms would crackle once I got past 80 ft down. I tried his method on the next three dives and the pot stayed clean, no pulling, no snags on the ladder. Sometimes the guy with two months on the job sees the thing you quit looking at years ago. Anyone else changed how they dress out their hose after watching somebody newer do it different?

Nothing like a two month greenhorn walking in and solving the mystery you been carrying around for twelve years, huh? Guess the rest of us been out here fighting our own hoses like it's some kind of job requirement. Tight coils putting memory in the line makes so much sense it's almost annoying I never caught it. The old hands probably watched me do it wrong for years and just let me suffer. Kids these days, coming in with their fresh eyes and their questions and their being right.
