Am I the only one who had a tender boat operator count my dive time out loud over the radio?
I was doing a 40 foot inspection on a pipeline near Morgan City last Tuesday when the operator on the radio started counting down my bottom time, seconds and all, like it was a launch sequence. It rattled me so bad I fumbled my gauge check, but he was right about the number and I surfaced with 4 minutes to spare. Does anyone else have a guy like that on deck, or do you run your own clock and tune everyone out?
Man that would drive me up the wall too. I run my own bottom timer and dive comp no matter what, but I've had deck hands call out my time before and it messes with your head even when they're right. Best thing I ever did was get with the operator before splash and tell him flat out, only call it if I hit my planned limit, otherwise let me work. Some of these guys come from a commercial background where the tender runs the clock, so they think they're helping. You did the right thing surfacing with gas in the tank, but yeah, tell him to zip it unless you're over. Keeps your head in the game instead of watching the seconds tick.
