A 4 inch cut off wheel saved my butt on a wet weld last Tuesday
Had a job at the pier in Gloucester where I had to weld a doubler plate onto a steel pile at about 22 feet down. The water was murky and my arc kept wandering, so I burned a couple rods and got some ugly undercut on the edge. I remembered an old diver telling me to keep a 4 inch cut off wheel on the barge for dressing welds between passes instead of waiting to do it all topside. I ran the wheel over that bad edge for maybe 90 seconds, came back down, and laid a clean pass right over it. The inspector signed off on the first look, which almost never happens for me. Curious if you guys dress wet welds underwater with a grinder or just fix them on the surface?
