Vent: I tried to get my friend into comics with a 'safe' pick and it backfired completely

My buddy said he wanted to try reading a comic, so I lent him the first trade of 'Saga', thinking it was a good mix of story and art. He gave it back after two days and said it was 'too weird' and he couldn't get past the giant cat that could tell if you were lying. I guess what's normal for us isn't for everyone. What's a better first book for someone who thinks spaceships and swords are already a lot?

That's a classic case of a gateway book that's actually a bit much for a new reader. Saga is brilliant, but it throws a lot at you right away. For someone who finds basic sci-fi elements a lot, you need something more grounded. Maybe try a standalone graphic novel with a real-world hook, like "The Fade Out" for a crime story or "Blankets" for a coming-of-age tale. It gets them used to the format without the fantasy overload. The goal is the medium first, then the genre.

Maybe start with a superhero book that feels like a movie?
