Totally bombed my attempt to introduce comics to my niece by picking a bad starting point.

Any tips for choosing a first comic for a kid that won't scare them off, lol?

What age is she? I messed up with my cousin's kid by going too dark too fast. For under 10, you can't go wrong with the "Bone" series by Jeff Smith. It's all cute cartoon characters having a big fantasy adventure, so it feels friendly. For something more modern, the "Amulet" graphic novels are a huge hit, my nephew blew through the whole series. Just avoid the classic superhero stuff at first, the continuity is a nightmare.

Remember trying to get my niece into comics with a Spider-Man book that had some weird, grim art from the 90s. She just closed it and asked if Spider-Man was always that sad, which totally broke my heart. Learned my lesson and grabbed the first "Lumberjanes" trade paperback the next week, all about friendship and solving mysteries at camp. She finished it in one sitting and now we trade volumes back and forth. Sometimes the vibe matters way more than the character.
