My buddy at the comic shop showed me a trick for finding mint back issues that actually works

I was digging through dollar bins at this shop in Portland for like 2 hours and coming up empty, then he told me to look for the books with a slight spine roll instead of focusing on the cover condition. Has anyone else found that the supposedly 'mint' books are usually the ones with hidden damage underneath?
