I thought grading comics was a scam until I saw the spine split on my X-Men #1 reprint, now I get it
I always figured grading was just a way for companies to make money off people who can't judge their own books. Took me 3 months and 47 YouTube videos to finally send in my copy of Giant-Size X-Men #1 to get pressed and graded. The spine split got worse just from me handling it wrong at home. I live in Phoenix where it's dry, so I figured my books were safe. Wrong. The presser in Dallas said the heat and humidity swings in my closet did more damage in 2 years than the last 40 did. Cost me $75 total with shipping both ways. Got a 4.5 back. Not great, but now I know. The thing that really changed my mind was watching a guy at my local shop open a slabbed book and show me the difference in how the pages held together. Anyone else pay to grade a book and get a lower number than they hoped for?
