Why does nobody preheat their cups before pouring?

I swear every time I go to a friend's house or even a decent cafe lately, they pour hot coffee straight into a cold ceramic mug. It drives me nuts. The temp drops like 10 degrees in the first 30 seconds and your coffee goes lukewarm before you even take a sip. I learned this the hard way after spending $60 on a thermometer and testing it at home. Just run some hot water in the cup for 20 seconds or microwave it for 15. It's not rocket science. Has anyone else noticed this or am I the only one who cares about keeping coffee hot past the first minute?

Yeah, I'm with you on this one. Microwave the mug for 15-20 seconds or just run hot tap water in it while you're grinding beans. The temperature difference is real, I tested it too with an instant read thermometer and it's like 8-10 degrees gone before you even add milk. People don't think about thermal mass, but a cold ceramic cup is basically a heat sink for your coffee. I got a cheap electric kettle with a hold temp setting, pour a little in the cup, swirl it around, dump it, then pour the coffee. Takes like 10 extra seconds and your coffee stays drinkable for way longer. Most cafes I've been to just don't bother because it's an extra step in their workflow, but it makes a noticeable difference.

Wait, have you ever looked into the science behind why ceramic is so bad at holding heat? I read this article from a coffee science blog that explained how ceramic is basically a thermal sponge because it's porous and has a high specific heat capacity, which means it pulls heat out of the liquid super fast. Glass is actually way better because it's non porous, and I've seen some cafes using double walled glass mugs specifically to fight this issue. I tried it myself with a cheap diner mug versus a glass one I got from a thrift store, and the glass cup kept my coffee hot for like 15 minutes longer. Makes you wonder why we all just default to ceramic.
