Just switched to weighing my coffee beans instead of scooping, and my $8 kitchen scale made better cups than my $40 grinder upgrade
I always thought a scale was overkill for drip coffee and just used the scoop that came with my Mr. Coffee. Last month my buddy Marcus in Austin handed me his $8 Amazon scale during a visit, and we brewed the same beans side by side with a 1:16 ratio. The scooped cup tasted thin and sour while the weighed one was sweet and full, and now I weigh every batch at 22 grams per 350ml. Anyone else resist the scale thing for way too long before caving?
Man, I was the same way. I figured a scale was for the coffee nerds with their pour over setups and glass carafes, not me and my old drip machine. Then my wife got me one for like ten bucks and I tried it on a lazy Sunday, and the difference hit me right away. Same beans, same water, but the weighed batch actually tasted like coffee instead of hot brown water. My scoops were all over the place too, sometimes heaping, sometimes barely full, so no wonder it was never the same twice. Now the scoop just sits in the drawer collecting dust.
