PSA: my Python script renamed 340 vacation photos into one giant mess
Last Thursday I finally tried to organize my photo folder with a little loop I copied from a tutorial. I tested it on 5 files and everything looked fine, so I ran it on the whole folder. Turns out my rename pattern counted from 1 every time a file had a dash in the name, so 340 photos from our trip to San Diego got turned into stuff like IMG_1.jpg and IMG_2.jpg, all overwriting each other. I sat there for maybe 10 seconds watching the files vanish before I hit Ctrl+C. I got about 60 back from the recycle bin, and the rest came from a cloud backup I forgot I even had turned on. Lesson learned the hard way, always dry run on a copy first and never trust a loop you found at 1am. Anyone got a rename tool that actually previews what it will do before it touches anything?
