Took a retired toolmaker's advice on finishing passes, now my parts look way better
I've been running a Haas VF-2 for about 4 years now and always did my finish pass at the same feed as my rough pass. Last month, a retired toolmaker from Detroit who hangs around the shop told me to slow the feed down to 20% on the finish pass, even though it feels like a waste of time. I shrugged it off at first, but after a job where I had to redo 12 parts because of chatter marks, I tried his way on the next batch. The surface finish is night and day, no more tearing on the aluminum. Has anyone else found that dropping your finish feed way down actually saves time in the long run, or do you just stick with what works?
