Stopped dialing in every tool at the machine and started setting them offline, cut my setup time from 45 minutes to 12
I run a Haas VF2 at a small shop in Dayton and setup used to eat half my shift. I was touching off every tool right at the machine with a piece of paper, one at a time, spindle stopped between each one. My lead guy showed me how to set a 1-2-3 block on the table and touch off against that instead, then just enter the offset in the control without jogging around for a shim. Last Thursday I set up 9 tools for a 200 piece run in 12 minutes flat, and that included a drill and a boring bar. Ran the first part and all my Z depths were dead on, no scrapped blank. I know a presetter is the real answer but for a shop that won't buy one this got me most of the way there. Curious what you guys do for tool offsets on a machine with no probe, do you touch off on the part or on a block?
