Old timer told me to run my rougher at 60% of rated speed, I called him crazy for 2 months
Honestly, I thought this guy from the morning shift was just stuck in the past. He kept saying 'these inserts last way longer and you won't lose that much cycle time' when I was pushing my 1/2 inch end mill at max spindle speed on some 6061. I ignored him and kept burning through a $45 insert every 3 parts, plus the surface finish was garbage. After I chipped a $120 holder on a deep pocket, I finally set my RPM to 7,500 instead of 12,500 and ran a test part. The cycle only went from 8 minutes to 9 minutes, but the insert looked brand new and the finish came out like glass. Now I'm wondering if all the 'run it faster' advice from the tool reps is just them trying to sell me more inserts. Has anyone else had a older operator's rule of thumb beat the numbers off the tooling chart?
