Found out the real cost of a coolant leak from a shop floor puddle
I was cleaning up a small drip under our old Haas and figured it was no big deal. Then our plant manager showed me the numbers from a leak detection study he did last quarter. A steady drip from one fitting can waste over 500 gallons of coolant a year, which is a couple thousand bucks down the drain. I found the full report pinned up in the break room. Now I check all my machine's lines every Monday morning. How often do you guys do a full coolant system check?

Yeah that "couple thousand bucks down the drain" line hit me. I used to ignore the little puddles too, told myself it was just condensation. Then I did the math on what my one leaky spindle cooler line was actually costing in lost coolant and extra top-offs. Felt like a real genius. I check lines every other day now, mostly because I'm paranoid about looking that dumb again.

My old foreman called me the "coolant fairy" because I left little wet trails all over the shop. I finally bought one of those cheap ultrasonic leak detectors after my third flood, and it turns out my main machine was basically a sprinkler system. You ever feel so dumb you start checking fittings like you're looking for loose change?
