Update: the compost bin at my Tulsa apartment got infested with fruit flies and my neighbor just shrugged

I dumped two cups of coffee grounds on top and covered the whole thing with a lid I drilled holes in, and the flies were gone in 3 days, so is there a better fix than coffee grounds or did I just get lucky?
