Solar vs. heat pump water heater, I picked solar and here's what happened

Tbh I had to choose between a $4,200 solar thermal setup and a $3,100 heat pump model for my house in Tucson. I went with solar because of the tax credit and my south-facing roof, and it's been 6 months now. The savings are real but the maintenance is way more than I expected, has anyone else dealt with scale buildup on the panels?
