My rain barrel experiment in July backfired big time
Set up a 50 gallon rain barrel off my downspout in Austin back in June, thought I was doing something good for the garden and the water bill. But after two weeks of heavy storms, the thing flooded my foundation because I forgot to add an overflow hose that pointed away from the house. The water pooled right against the slab, and I had to haul 40 pounds of sandbags to redirect the next runoff. Learned the hard way that capturing water isn't just about the barrel, you need to plan where the extra goes before it rains. My neighbor suggested a simple diverter valve for under $20, which I'm installing this weekend. Has anyone else dealt with a similar rookie mistake with their own setup?

Plan where the extra goes before it rains" really hits home. That's basically every good idea I've ever had, the part I skip is the backup plan for when things go sideways.
