A guy at the recycling center in Boise asked why I was rinsing cans, and it stuck with me
I used to spend about 20 minutes every week rinsing out jars and cans before tossing them in the bin, thinking that was required. He told me the plant sorts it fine either way and all that hot water was doing more harm than the dirty cans would. Now I just scrape the food out and skip the rinse, which also cut my water bill a bit. Has anyone else changed a habit like this after one random comment?
My grandma used to wash hers so clean you could eat off them and the plant still sent a letter once saying her load was "contaminated" somehow. Turns out the trucks that pick up recycling run on schedules, so having less water weight in the bin actually means fewer trips needed. Little stuff like that adds up way more than people realize lol.
