A guy at the NAPA counter in Reno said my timing was 6 degrees off and he was right
I went in last Saturday for a fuel filter for my 67 Mustang and got to talking with the old guy behind the counter about how she was running rough at idle. He said to check the timing before buying any parts, and mine was sitting at 12 degrees when the book calls for 6. I set it back, cleaned the points while I was in there, and she idles smooth as glass now. Two hours of my life and zero dollars, after I had already priced out a whole new carb. Anybody got a favorite way to check dwell at home without a fancy meter?
So the NAPA guy saved you a carb rebuild just by knowing how to read a timing light? That's got to sting a little, huh? You had your wallet out and everything and some old timer with grease under his nails fixes it with a wrench. Next time buy that man a coffee at least. As for dwell, I just use a cheap meter with a dwell setting, they're like twenty bucks and way less fuss than trying to eyeball the points gap with a feeler gauge while the car's running.
