Update: my mug's crack went from a hairline to fully leaking on Tuesday, and it was the hot tap water in Fort Worth that did it
For 4 years that crack stayed sealed and harmless, then after I moved to Fort Worth and started rinsing it with scalding tap water every morning, it opened up in under 2 weeks, so now I'm trying to decide if I live with a shelf mug or risk the dishwasher, what would you do?

Yikes, Fort Worth tap water out here acting like a tiny jackhammer on your mug. I'd retire it to shelf duty and let it live out its days as a pen holder or something, because the dishwasher is basically a death sentence at this point.
