Tried the salt scrub trick on a coffee stain, the glaze came off too

Last Tuesday I scrubbed my favorite blue diner mug with coarse salt and lemon juice to get rid of a stubborn ring, but now the glaze is peeling in little flakes around the chip. The stain is gone but the mug feels rough on my lip and I'm worried pieces could end up in my drink. Has anyone else messed up a finish trying to clean a mug, and is there a safe way to seal the exposed clay or should I just retire it?
