Warning: My dad's old school method for checking draft almost sealed the fireplace shut
He shoved a whole plastic bag up there to see if it would get sucked in, and it melted and stuck to the lining. I spent half a day scraping out this nasty, hardened goo instead of doing a normal sweep. Now he's telling all my uncles it's a legit trick, and I have to keep correcting them.

Yeah, heard using a lit candle or some incense smoke is the way to check for a draft. Lets you see the air movement without leaving a melted mess to clean up.

Actually, @daniel741, that smoke trick is pretty unreliable in my experience.
