That one time a squirrel built a nest in a flue and I spent 4 hours on a 30 minute job

Got a call for a basic sweep in a quiet neighborhood. Pulled the damper and a whole avalanche of acorns and leaves came down, followed by a VERY angry squirrel staring at me. The little guy had packed the entire chimney with nesting material. I had to gently coax him out with a long pole and a blanket, then spend the next three and a half hours pulling out what felt like a whole forest. My simple clean turned into a full wildlife removal. Anyone ever had a critter situation that totally blew up your schedule?

Gently coax him out with a long pole" is the part that gets me. How do you even start that conversation with a squirrel? What was your game plan once he was out of the chimney?

The pole was just to keep the screen door open for him.
