That one customer who almost burned his house down last week
Guy in Wichita insisted I skip the inspection because he was 'in a hurry,' then admitted he'd been burning treated lumber for a month when I pulled a chunk of 2x4 out of his flue. Has anyone else had a homeowner fight you on the basic sweep and then thank you later when you show them the damage?

People always think they know better until they see the smoke stains and that creosote buildup that looks like tar dripping down the pipe. Treated lumber is the worst too, that stuff puts off chemicals that eat through your flue liner over time, not to mention the fire risk. The guy probably thought he was saving twenty minutes and ended up with a chimney that needs a full reline, which is way more expensive and a bigger headache. Typical story though, they fight you on the easy stuff then act surprised when the damage is right there in front of them. Good on you for catching it before it turned into a call to the fire department.
