Spent 4 hours on a nest today because the flue was capped with a piece of slate from 1962
Pulled the cap, found a cracked crown and a birds nest the size of a bowling ball, and the whole job should've been 45 minutes instead of most of my afternoon, so now I want to know how many of you check the cap before you even pull the rods off the truck.
That slate cap from 1962 is the real villain here. I feel for you, four hours on what should be a quick job is brutal, and a bowling ball sized nest on top of a cracked crown means you probably had to pull the whole thing apart anyway. I've been burned enough times that now I shine a light up the flue from the firebox side before I even touch the truck bed. Saves me from dragging out the rods just to find out some old timer capped it with whatever was lying around. You earned a cold one after that mess.
