Cleaned a flue in a 1910 farmhouse that went from a 2-inch creosote plug to a clean draw in under an hour with a new carbide scraper.

The owner said he hadn't had a good fire in three winters, but after we got through the glazed layer, the draft test showed perfect pull, so what's your go-to method for that really hard, baked-on stuff?

Man, I used to swear by letting that chemical foam sit overnight. What a waste of time. @the_sean is right about that glassy layer, it just laughs at chemicals. I finally tried a heavy duty rotary whip with the carbide cutters, like you mentioned. The difference was crazy. It went from a rock-hard shell to dust in minutes. I won't go back to the slow way now.

That "glazed layer" is the worst. When you hit that glassy, baked-on creosote, do you step up to a more aggressive chain whip, or do you have a specific chemical treatment you let sit first?
