Wasted $180 on a knife sharpening service that wrecked my blades

Took my whole kit to a fancy sharpening place downtown last month. Got them back and my chef's knife had a weird angle on the edge, like they used a grinder instead of stones. Chipped two of my favorites within a week. I know my knives arent top tier but they were solid. Now I'm back to hand sharpening with a $20 stone. Has anyone else had a sharpening service mess up their gear or did I just pick a bad spot?
