I spent 10 years installing baseboards the wrong way, until a framer in Omaha pointed out my coping trick
I always coped inside corners with a 45 degree miter and a coping saw, but this framer showed me how a sharp knife and a steady hand can handle it faster and cleaner, so has anyone else switched methods after years of habit and felt dumb about it?

...and that's exactly what happened to my buddy Lou last spring. He'd been doing crown molding for like fifteen years, always with the coping saw, and one day this old-timer on a job in Des Moines just pulls out a utility knife and starts scoring the back of the piece. Lou told me he stood there watching for a minute, thinking the guy was crazy, but then he saw how clean the cut was and how he didn't have to sand anything down. Now Lou swears by it, even sold his electric coping saw at a garage sale. He said he felt like an absolute clown for all those years of fighting with the saw when a sharp blade did the job in half the time. Makes you wonder what else we're all doing the hard way without even knowing it.
