Watched a guy turn down a $6k raise in Austin because the new title said "Senior" instead of "Lead"
I sat next to him at a work dinner two months ago and he told me he turned it down on the spot. His reason was that "Lead" looks better on a resume than "Senior" and he did not want to explain the difference to hiring managers later. Here is the thing though... the raise was real money, about $500 extra a month after taxes, and his current company had not given him a title bump in 3 years. I have been on the other side of the table for interviews at my last two jobs and I have never once cared whether a candidate was called Lead or Senior, I only asked what they actually built and who they worked with. Titles vary so much between companies that two people with the same word on their badge can have totally different jobs. If you are about to say no to more money because of a word on a business card, what is the actual offer you think you are protecting?
