The day my resume format cost me an interview

I used to think fancy resume templates with graphics and two columns looked impressive. Then I applied to about 30 jobs over three months, not one callback. I was sitting in a coffee shop in Austin when a recruiter friend looked at my resume and laughed. She said the ATS system couldn't even read half my text because of the layout. I spent that afternoon rebuilding it as a plain single column doc with simple bullet points. Next week I got three interviews, and one of them turned into an offer. Anyone else had a formatting mistake silently kill their job hunt for months?
