My old boss said something about raises that bugged me for a week

We grabbed coffee near her office in Denver and she said she never fought for a raise in 12 years, she just waited to be noticed. I asked for 3 grand more at my review that Friday and got 2. How do you all bring up money without feeling like you're begging?
