I told my crew to stop working for free on estimates and it changed our whole month.
Last week, I sat down and added up all the time we spent driving to give free quotes for small jobs, and it was over 30 hours for the month. I started charging a $50 fee for any estimate that takes more than 15 minutes, which gets taken off the final bill if they hire us. Now we're actually getting paid for our knowledge and time, and the calls we get are more serious. Has anyone else tried this in a trade business?

Wish I'd learned that before giving away a thousand free quotes.

Oof, that's a rough lesson to learn the hard way. Did you find that most of the people asking for quotes just vanished after you sent them, or did they come back with endless questions?
