I spent $800 on a fancy online course that didn't help at all

It was a 'career accelerator' program that promised to teach you how to get promoted. The only thing I got was a generic certificate and a bunch of info I could find for free. Has anyone found a good, cheap way to learn real management skills?

Ugh, that's such a scam. I read an article about how the best way to learn management is to just start doing it in small ways where you already work. Like, volunteer to run a small meeting or help train a new person. Those real problems teach you way more than any generic lesson. Maybe ask your boss for one small extra duty to practice on?
