Figuring out a weird payroll tax glitch took me three days instead of an hour
I was doing the quarterly payroll for our small office last week, and one employee's federal withholding just would not calculate right in our software. It kept showing a number that was way too high, like double what it should have been. I checked the pay rate, the W-4 form, everything looked normal. I spent a whole afternoon on it, then came back the next morning and started over. Turns out, the software had a weird default setting for 'additional withholding' that got checked somehow, but it wasn't showing up on the main screen I always use. I had to dig into the advanced employee settings to find it and uncheck the box. What I thought was a quick fix on Monday basically ate up my whole Tuesday and part of Wednesday, lol. Has anyone else run into a random software setting that completely messed up a simple task?

Ugh, that's the worst. Honestly, it feels like they hide those settings on purpose sometimes. I had a similar thing where the system started rounding tax amounts in a weird new way after an update, and it took forever to find the toggle to turn it back to normal.

Check the audit log next time, it sometimes shows which user changed that hidden setting.
