Hot take: I blew $22 on a tape gun and it built my kid a better fort than the $40 kit
So my son's birthday was coming up and I did the thing where I panic buy. I grabbed one of those cardboard construction kits from the store for $40. You know the ones, they come with plastic brackets and little screws and a picture on the box of a castle. Total garbage. The brackets snapped on the second wall, the screws stripped out of the cardboard, and my kid was in tears by dinner. Next weekend I drove to the hardware store and spent $22 on a real tape gun, the heavy metal kind with the big roll of packing tape, plus a $6 box cutter with a fresh blade. That was it. We raided the recycling bin behind the grocery store on Sunday and came home with like 14 boxes, some of them huge appliance boxes. We built a two room fort in the living room in about an hour, with a door that actually opened and a window cut with the box cutter and duct tape hinges. The tape gun holds the flaps tight so the walls don't flop over when he leans on them. Best part is the whole thing cost less than half the kit and it's still standing three weeks later. Has anyone else skipped the fancy kits and just used tape and a knife, or am I the last person to figure this out?
