Vent: my buddy said my 'lazy' burgers were why nobody stayed for the cookout, and he was kind of right
Invited 9 people over for a backyard cookout in Reno last Saturday and 5 of them bailed within an hour of eating. My friend Dave pulled me aside and said the patties were dry because I was pre-making them at noon and letting them sit, and honestly he wasn't wrong. So now I salt the meat right before it hits the grill and press the middle down with my thumb, and the last batch actually got eaten. Here's the thing though, we still had a full cooler and an empty yard by 8pm, so was it really the burgers or does everyone just bail on cookouts now?
Wondering if the real problem is that cookouts switched from being an all day hang to a quick eat and run kind of thing. People treat them like a dinner reservation now, they show up, eat, check the box, and leave because there's nothing pulling them to stay. Nobody brings a lawn game, nobody brings a guitar, nobody brings anything to do, so once the food is gone the party is over. Back in the day you'd have horseshoes or a fire pit or somebody's kid running around keeping things alive past dark. So yeah the dry burgers sped up the exit but I bet even with perfect patties half those people were gonna leave by 8 anyway.
