Trying to fix a leaky faucet turned into a 3 day project

I thought swapping a washer would take 20 minutes, but the old valve was so corroded I had to drain the whole line and run to the hardware store twice. By the time I finished, I'd spent $47 and most of a weekend. Is it normal for a small DIY fix to snowball like that, or am I just bad at judging scope?
